From Oxford to the World Stage: Meeting our 2026 World Qualifiers

2–3 minutes

The bags are (almost) packed, the shoes are polished, and the intensity in the studio has reached a whole new level.

We are incredibly proud to announce that three of our elite dancers have qualified to represent the Marion Flanagan School of Irish Dance at the 2026 CLRG World Irish Dance Championships (Oireachtas Rince na Cruinne). This March, they will fly to Chicago to compete against the finest dancers from every corner of the globe.

The Road to the Worlds: The Southern Region Oireachtas

For dancers in our area, the journey to the World Championships begins at the Southern Region Oireachtas. Held every November, this prestigious event brings together the best dancers from across the South of England. It is a high-pressure weekend where only the top-placing dancers earn the coveted “World Qualifier” status.

We are thrilled to celebrate the incredible regional results of our 2026 World Team:

  • Grace (Under 12): Qualified 6th in the Region.
  • Matilda (Under 15): Qualified 4th in the Region.
  • Leila (Under 16): Qualified 8th in the Region.

Securing a top-10 regional placing in these age groups is a monumental feat. It requires not just talent, but the mental strength to perform three rounds—two solo rounds and a final set dance—under the watchful eyes of a panel of international adjudicators.

What it Takes to Compete in Chicago

Qualifying is just the beginning. Since November, Grace, Matilda, and Leila have been in “major motion,” balancing schoolwork with a rigorous training programme. To compete on the world stage, they must master:

Technical Precision: Flawless footwork and turnout in both heavy and soft shoe.
Athletic Stamina: Irish dance is an Olympic-level aerobic challenge; maintaining peak energy for the duration of a round is vital.
Artistry: Bringing the “wow factor” to the stage through carriage and presence.
